With the F-Gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573, the European Union is tightening the regulations governing the use of fluorinated refrigerants. For operators, designers and machinery manufacturers, choosing the right refrigerant is therefore becoming even more important. From 1 January 2027, new limits on the global warming potential (GWP) of the refrigerant used will apply to new chillers placed on the market.
GWP limits from 2027.
The Regulation sets out the following limits for new chillers placed on the market:
- Chillers with a cooling capacity of up to 12 kW: GWP ≤ 150
- Chillers with a cooling capacity of over 12 kW: GWP ≤ 750
In this way, the EU is promoting the use of more climate-friendly refrigerants and supporting the further reduction of emissions of fluorinated greenhouse gases.
Impact on industrial cooling.
The requirements apply in particular to new installations and future investment decisions. Many refrigerants currently in use will no longer meet future regulations. Important for operators of existing systems: The regulations primarily concern the placing on the market of new systems. Existing systems can generally continue to be operated. The applicable operating, service and local regulations are decisive in this regard.
